There are many methods to play online. There are the IGZone games host, the Hamachi program to create an extended LAN network to play MM2 in LAN mode, the SlideGamers server host and some other MM2 dedicated server.

I guess that's quite hard to make an MM2 online gameplay without problems. I haven't never tried.
