As far as I know, the trailer object on a player car is separated from the car .pkg file; in few words, there are two .pkg files, one for the car and one for the trailer. After, the trailed will be placed throught a file, maybe a .mtx one with its .dgbangerdata (so you have to place carefully the trailer object axis, not center them). Of course the trailer .pkg file has to be exported as Trailer type. I don't know a lot about them, thought.
For the smoke, you just need flat objects with centered axis, because it's this last that's important, like for the two headlights objects and any other object with the .mtx file generated. You don't need to texture them, so assign the Default Material to them. Their names are EXHAUST0_H:m and EXHAUST1_H:m, and you can use also only the first one.

It's really a pain to handle a trailer in-game. You must fix the hitch position (edit the file > save > start the game > check > close the game > fix values > save > restart the game and so on).
To answer at your questions.
- yep as Franch said, you must choose trailer from the dialog box (paintjobs method is the same) ;
- this object such as BOUND or HLIGHT don't need to be textured ;
- you can handle maximum eight wheels (but the last are inverted if I remember well) ;
- the exhaust object don't need to be textured, copy one of your MM2 lights (T/R/BLIGHT) then move it to adjust the exhausting position ;
BTW it's very hard also to handle the MM2 lights for a trailer, indeed you CAN'T fix the position, neither the trailer object in-game or the lights. This really sucks.

sorry for double post.
i have a problem when i want to convert a car from NFS HP2. the game always crash when loading. why that happen? i was checked all of things on the archive, in ZM, info, and more. but the game still crashes. i can see it in MM2 Behicle Viewer, but the game crashes when loading at first time. maybe there is somethings is not valid in the archive, but i don't know exactly...
here the pic:
please, checked it, and tell me if i'm wrong when named the object in ZM...
i always stuck when i want to convert it from NFS HP2. just from that game, not for another one, like GTA SA and 18 WOS PTTM.

If isn't a simple problem of too much add-ons in the game folder, maybe there's some file missing. Until I don't do checkings is hard to say.
The polygons count of the whole car is only of about 30000 polygons; have you centered the axis of all the objects?
