Mario and Sonic... two of the most popular games characters ever... but which one is better?

Isn't possible say which is better, better in what, then? Better ask which one you prefer of both, becoming a personal opinion and referring also about the games features, not only the character.
Both are milestones of games history. I've played way more Nintendo Super Mario games than SEGA Sonic games when I was younger. In particular I've played the first historic version of Super Mario. I know also some 1980s clones of these games. Sonic has a more faster gameplay and little action, and because of this I prefer the Super Mario's one. I found the Sonic's world and characters more stylish, though. Both are better with the classic platform games 2D view.
Recently I've seen which have been all the official games of both the characters. Super Mario has now 25 years and Sonic 20 years. I've also read a recension and seen videos of the new Sonic Generations game.
So, mainly because of the gameplay, I would say that I prefer more the Italian plumber games than the blue hedgehog games.

Super Mario 64, Mario Kart ,Mario Party 3, Super Mario Sunshine, and Mario Party 4 took up most of my childhood. I enjoyed them all tons and played them to death.

I like both, I played Super Mario Classic back when I was really young, it was really attractive. And I also like Sonic too now because Im into fast paced games that give me a lot of adrenaline. So I don't think I have a pick between them both.
