Megaupload was taken down.

Postby piau9000 » Fri Jan 20, 2012 12:44 am

Popular file sharing site MegaUpload has been shut down by federal authorities today who executed an indictment against the company and its founder. The indictment claims that the site was responsible for $500 million in losses to copyright holders due to music and movie piracy. Kim Dotcom, founder of MegaUpload maintains that his company has obeyed all due diligence requirements in regards to piracy issues.

It's sad because a lot of non-pirated stuff are hosted there.
Each day that passes the internet became more controled... :(

Yeah, it's a bummer. I have been using it for hosting to share mm2 related things with people. I guess I'll have to use Mediafire only now. Most file hosts don't work good for me, which seems to be because I have a shared IP address.

It's funny that Anon took down, or at least crippled, the sites of DoJ, MPAA, RIAA, and Universal Music. I'm not sure how this helps though, but it's interesting to see someone fighting back in some way.

Seeing Megaupload being taken down makes me wonder if sometime in the near future, Rapidshare will be taken down.

I'm not sure how effective taking down filehosting sites and torrent sites will be at stopping piracy. I think they need some new strategies.

according to the U.S. government 100 pages were blocked, including Wikipedia, mostly because people do not buy books or music purchasing. :?

Pretty shocking news. The FBI has closed Megaupload, and this can be a bad start for the potential closing o other file hosting websites that have copyrighted material uploaded. I liked Megaupload for the download speed, and it wasn't so much annoying with waitings and CAPTCHA entering, unlike others. I remember that right Megaupload got denounced for illegal hosting of copyrighted materials some months ago.
Let's hope that the actually discussed SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) laws designs don't get approved, which give powers to the copyrighted material owners, meaning the end of the Internet freedom; some companies are already boycotting them.

Good speech HummersRock.
I totally agree. New strategies need to be used.

Piratebay was blocked several times but they aways find a new way to access the page. This method of blocking does not work. Maybe they can work with these site together instead of pursuing then.

The Anon tried hacking the FBI page too but it seems that they failed (at least for me, I can still see the page).

It's a really sad day for the internet. They're preparing the ground for their stupid laws: SOPA and PIPA. :(

I think they are doing the right thing but do not have to lock Megaupload. :?

God dammit, I had plenty of useful files backed up there that I used from time to time, such as the Zmodeler DLL files that fix the PKG filter issue.... :x
This is very bad news, it seems that by doing this, they're gonna let SOPA and PIPA get approved...

I don't think they could successfully work with the Piratebay in any way.

I think one thing that everyone needs to realize--this is more directed at RIAA, MPAA, etc--, and accept, is that: no matter what, things will be pirated, and used without permission against copyright. The only way to completely eliminate this, would be to brainchip everyone on the planet and mind control us. Which would be terrible.

And taking down every site that do such things, or somehow help people do it (like filesharing sites), is just going to make everyone angry. I don't think that is going to help at all. Currently, I can't think of what would really help. But it's obvious that most people have very different views about piracy and copyright then RIAA, MPAA, etc. I guess everyone needs to change some to come to some sort of compromise, but greed and corruption may not allow it.

I'm too tired right now to post anything else on the subject or think of anything good that would help. Lol.

EDIT: As far as SOPA and PIPA: I really hope they don't get approved and it, at least was, looking like SOPA isn't going to. If they do though, I guess there goes internet freedom. I spend most of my time on the internet, so if it's get approved and sites start dropping like flies, I'll need a new hobby.

Well...this is how 2012 starts..

Really pissed off after seeing the news about this. Not to mention their executives (a co-founder in new zealand I think) got arrested obviously, etc... Oh well. Anonymous already made its move by shutting down FBIs' site and the other ones. (Or whatevers called).. Plus, the American Government is doing all this crap just to make money themselves.. 2012 indeed.. -.-

Hoping to see more effort from Anon' to put some pressure on the government.

The stupid feds should stop abusing their rights... I see good ending because there's REALLY no reason MegaUpload to be taken down...

I see CIA raging against FBI for not having authorities to do that :P

You should do your research before you sputter nothing but nonsense. The FBI isn't abusing their power, MegaUpload was operating an illegal business behind a legitimate front, you can thank the Dotcom dude for allowing this to happen.
