what program I need to extract ar format file?

To extract .ar file format of the default game files (they're four), is needed DeAR 2 program, available here. To extract the downloaded add-ons and mods .ar files, if they're not locked, is enough use archives managers like WinZip, WinRar and 7Zip.

If you downloaded a car ,just put the ar file into mm2 directory

If is so do better the question... The .ar file content hasn't to be extracted if you just want to play it in-game, just place the downloaded .ar file after have extracted it from the downloaded archive in the main game folder, usually placed in the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Midtown Madness 2. Run the game and enjoy what you've downloaded, but caution with adding these .ar files, too much of them will start to give game loading crashes.

You want to replace the default cars or the downloadable ones?

I want to replace downloaded car to default cars

Ask dummiesboy to give a file called "! ! !nodefaultcars.ar"
This will remove default cars from selection screen. But you'll still see them in races. You should not delete original content

Aris, you may have too many mods installed if the game is crashing, or you may just have some unnsupported hardware

In my understanding in your question, you cannot actually replace a default car to an add-on car. MM2 Add-on installing isn't the same as the process of some NFS Games.
In MM2, you just have to add a car. Not replace.
However,there are limitations on adding new car to MM2. If you happen to add so many add-on's then there is a big possibility you will get errors.

It is also possible to delete the default cars if you don't want them to see on the select car display. As also being said and suggested in the above post. Which is not that recommended.
