There's only the Software Rendering selection

My father has another computer he can only select Software Rendering.
I have tried the videopatcher and after I have executed the patch, the video.cfg shows hardware mode. But then when I execute midtown.exe I get a message (Click OK to have Midtown Madness detect the presence of a hardware accelerator card. This may take a few seconds, during which your screen may flicker.) And then, the video.cfg shows only software mode again. I wonder why the video.cfg shows only software mode again after I start the game after I have executed the patch. Please help!
