Cannot be a 2001, the model is same as MM1 one so it's one of the earliest model years

Wow, that's nice!
As i know, the developing of Midtown Madness 1 and 2, there wasn't a 79 VW Van in the game files.
Maybe the dialogue talks about a traffic car, these that are roaming in the city.
I think it's the EuroVan or the hidden MiniVan.

The models between 2000 and 2001 are technically the same (I think, maybe the MM1 version has less polys. lol) but the game says other history. :P

Also i never found differences between these cars in real life, the 2000 and 2001 so that's why the developers haven't changed anything if they look almost the same.

Nice curiosity and good find.

Without do much fantasy hypothesis, as said, that's just a funny commenting of an hippie about trade his van with the New Beetle, and it's well known what the 1979 Volkswagen Van is the vehicle symbol of hippies lifestyle.
Concerning the 2001 year of the VW New Beetle, ahead than the game release, it could be referred to the Model Year, that is always one or two years ahead the year of the official presenting and selling of a car.

Thought there was gonna be a list. Also, it reminds me of Tokyo Drift's Keiichi Tsuchiya joke :

- "I'm ready to take that '86 Corolla off your hands."
- "All right. Put up the '72 Skyline."

So, its more like a joke, like Franch88 stated. Microsoft had license to VW, and not any other company like the toyota that they could wisecrack on. So they humanly fling a daft VW joke (Not knowing wut happens in '15 to VW, which is a bigger joke, lolz). Besides the war here over the 2000 or 2001, I googled the differences and i found some cool things. Like the '99 - '02 TDi models had an electronic spoiler that tempered up when speeding above 95mph. That in a beetle ! Mother of God 8O.
