How to make an avatar as the shape of a car

Postby EnzoSkylineMiura » Tue Jan 31, 2012 4:21 am

You know kunal's avatar? Its the shape of a Zonda Cinque. And you know Riva's signature? It has the MM2 logo and behind it is the background. Could somebody tell me how to do that?

Well Kunal's avatar is either a GIF or a PNG (the image file type). These types allow for transparency, so you can make the image look like whatever shape you want, even though it's still technically a square image.

Any image editing program will allow you to save as these types. The only tricky part is removing the unwanted parts of the image and replacing them with one, solid color. White is the main one to use. I think some programs might only accept white. Others, like Photoshop, will allow you to select the colors you want to have transparent, allowing you to make the whole image transparent if wanted.

You can either use the eraser tool to remove the unwanted parts of the image (I sometimes do this), the lasso too, or the magic wand tool. The magic wand tool can sometimes be the easiest, because you just click and it will select certain parts of the image itself, based on the settings (which you can change). I find usually though, unless the image is very high quality/detail, you need to use both the magic wand and lass tools, or the eraser. Although it depends on the image, most of the time you want to remove all of the image accept for the car or object you want, before you re-size it. The higher resolution and higher quality an image is, the easier it is to do. The lower resolution and lower quality an image is, the harder it is to do.

Hope this helps.

What you would do (in Photoshop) is that you would wanna remove the background, (for example) the road on your avatar for instance, and just leave the BMW stay like that. What Hummers said should work. Basically you have to either choose the magic wand, lasso or polygonal lasso tool, (polygonal lasso is best for me, but if you use this, you'd have to zoom closer to the edges of the BMW on your avatar to get accurate results) But when you've selected the whole part of the BMW, then Ctrl+C it, goto File >> New, click OK on the small window that pops up. Then Ctrl+V it, you'll only see the car itself, and the background is transparent (should be..). So then save it as .png (thats what I do) and there you go. This should work.

Btw HR's method should work too as long as you understand it further. ;)

With the new versions of PS you need to work on alpha channels too , in the right panel where the layers are shown there is another tab that says Channels , the last one should be called alpha and the red parts show the parts that are transparent , also on saving don't forget to check on Transparency ;)

If you really need help with Photoshop, YouTube has tons and tons of tutorials for you to look at.

Ya, I use the polygonal lasso too. And thanks to everybody who posted here!
